Seventh (7th) chords is the topic for this music theory lesson. Learn the different types such as major seventh, minor seventh, dominant seventh, and diminished seventh chords; as well as how they are constructed. There are 5 main types of 7th chords; the major 7th chord, the dominant 7th chord, the minor 7th chord, the half diminished 7th chord, and the fully diminished 7th chord. The Major 7th has a major triad with a major 7th ( half step away from key note). Dominant seventh chords have a major triad and a minor 7th (whole step away). The minor seventh has a minor triad plus a minor 7th. A half diminished 7th is a diminished triad plus a minor 7th. Finally, the fully diminished has a diminished triad plus a diminished 7th (1 and 1/2 steps away). This is an easy music theory 101 tutorial lesson for beginners.
